Course 3: The Art of Awareness

Part 1: Powerful Questioning

You know you have asked a powerful question when all of a sudden, the room is quiet. For the coachee will find themselves in a place of deep reflection and paradigm-shifting. Powerful questions when asked at the right time and that are spot-on, have great power.

In this part of the course, students learn how to ask questions that allow the coachee to gain clarity and understand their perspective. Students also learn the art of asking questions to provoke deep and alternative thinking in the coachee. Finally, students learn questioning skills to help the coachee to evaluate themselves and their situation, to explore options, facts, thoughts, and feelings. The art of questioning is practiced through group coaching, observed coaching, and peer coaching.

Part 2: Communicate Effectively and Positively

In this part of course three, students will focus on the principles of communication. Communications are an essential skill for coaches. It is just as important as the skill of asking powerful questions. This skill requires the coach to articulate clear, culturally competent, and direct language to the coachee. Communication includes precise language that reflects the coachees own words, structures of interpretation, and mental models.

Students will learn to not be attached to their own perspectives, understanding, and assessments. Students will also learn how to share his/her own understanding and learning that helps the coachee to extrapolate new perspectives to relevant broader contexts. The art of communicating effectively and positively is practiced in group coaching, observed coaching, and peer coaching.

Part 3: creating awareness

According to the International Coaching Federation, “The ultimate purpose of coaching is to support our clients as they gain an awareness of how to move forward toward their desired outcomes” (ICF, 2019). This part of the course aims to teach students how coaching can be used to move coachees towards total awareness and unlock their hidden talents. Students do this by coaching the coachee towards self-discovery using an inquiry-based approach to coaching.

In this part of the course, students are taught the hindrance of a coachees potential gremlins, triggers, and blockers. Self-discovery techniques are taught as a mode of identification of anything holding a coachee back. There is a focus on identifying underlying concerns and leveraging the strengths of the coachee to make forward progress. Students gain practical experience applying these concepts through peer and group coaching activities.
